Seismic Analytics & Intelligent Interpretation Laboratory

Geophysics is an area of science that describes earth media based on their physical properties. Specifically, exploration geophysics has mainly been applied to locate natural resources (hydrocarbon, natural gas, gas hydrate, mineral resources and ground water under the ground or seabed), to evaluate civil engineering sites (including detection of cavities under road surface), to resolve environmental problems (locating contaminated area), to mitigate climate change (based on carbon capture and storage (CCS)), etc. Most of geophysical methods, such as gravity, magnetic, electrical, and seismic methods, are based on data acquisition, processing, and interpretation.

Our studies focus on developing new geophysical data processing and interpretation techniques to obtain high-resolution subsurface images and to precisely interpret subsurface structures from field data. We have developed high-performance seismic modeling and inversion techniques for oil and gas exploration, which are now used for carbon-dioxide injection monitoring in CCS projects as well. The SAiL lab’s specialty is to develop seismic interpretation techniques. This group will contribute to enhancing fidelity of seismic data interpretation, automated data interpretation, petrophysical analysis, and a static property modeling flow. We also aim to generate a matured workflow of static property modeling and its uncertainty quantification.

Our lab focuses on the research and development of integrated solution of automated reservoir characterization, AI-driven subsurface interpretation, and time-lapse monitoring. Our research in applied geophysics aspect is mainly focused on developing a new tools for automated interpretation of geophysical and petrophysical data. Also with this, we are to expand our technical solutions to multiple disciplines.
